Why is a Maul Needed?

The maul is a new model to hit our asset list as the Mayor character was recently reworked to fit our new story changes. The Mayor was originally a character never needing such a tool to fulfill his role in our short, but the recent changes have turned him into a menacing character with full armor and weaponry. The maul will be the Mayor’s weapon of choice and will be used when he is seen confronting Saint George and the Dragon, Theodore. The group thought it would be more fitting for the Mayor to have a long maul that would require much swinging and strength to wield it, which is fitting for the Mayor’s physique.

Modeling with Efficiency

The maul is divided into four parts the maul head, the handle, the neck, and the rope. The design of the maul is mostly replicated from the concept art included. The maul head is designed to look as though it has not been recently forged and has been through a number of violent encounters. The base model was created in Maya with the breakup detail sculpted in Zbrush. The rope has been replicated from the concept with a little simplicity applied to it. The rope was created using combined curves in Maya and rope model done in Houdini. Houdini offers greater control when creating models like ropes. High poly and low poly versions can also be generated and managed with edits far faster in Houdini than in Maya. The screenshots include the full curve created in Maya along with the high poly version of the rope.

What's Ahead?

The maul head and rope are expected to be reworked in the near future to improve upon the current versions. The rope will be reworked to add more wrapping around the maul head. Adding more of the rope wrapping around the maul head will ensure its structural appearance. The neck and handle have been finalized and are ready for texturing.
